NBTC sets up "5G" to create a turning point for Thai economy-politics

Monday November 19, 2018

Addressing a recent seminar on the topic "5G: Economy-Thai Politics Landscape Turning Point", Mr. Thakon Tanthasit, Secretary-General of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), said that after 2020, 5G will change Thailand’s economic structure.

“As artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (loT) gain ground, robots will work instead of people, thereby reducing costs and increasing value,” he said. “While the production chain will change, manufacturers will sell directly to BIG Data customers. The power of precision will reduce costs in production planning. Products will meet the needs of consumers.”

“Meanwhile, the sectors that act as intermediaries in business operations will be reduced and eventually disappear, including banks, travel agents, and merchants. At the same time, there will be new developments and new businesses based on new technologies will arise.”

“As for political changes in the 5G era, it will affect elections. Voters will have rights without borders. The future will arrive online. Secret voting will take place in every polling station digitally. No need to travel or return to domicile to vote, making elections more convenient. Similarly with campaigning, there will be no need to go through middlemen such as village headmen. Social media will take their place. BIG Data will be used to create a sound base while enabling two-way communication.”

Mr. Weerawat Kiattipongthaworn, Chief Executive Officer, Business Relations and Organisation, Advanced Info Service Plc. (ADVANC), said he expects that 5G technology will begin making a real difference within 2019.

“To this end, AIS’s 5G will be 100X faster than 4G,” he said. “Moreover, it will enable each person to have more than one ID and will operate with a lightning-fast response time (latency). This will make it suitable for medical devices, unmanned aircraft, and a whole host of other applications. The best is yet to come.”
