The Bangkok Post 10km International begins.
The Bangkok Post 10km International Run yesterday attracted about 4000 participants, Kenya’s Jospat Kiptanui winning the overall men’s title.
Organisers were impressed by the turn-out for the race, now in its fifth year, held to raise funds for the Bangkok Post Foundation.
‘‘It was really beyond our expectations,’’ said Songkram Kraisonthi, from Amazing Field, which organised the event for the second straight year.
‘‘I targeted only 3000 racers. We met that target six days before the event.’’ Songkram believes the race could become the biggest mini-marathon event in the capital.
‘‘Only five years since its debut in 2009, it’s become really successful,’’ he said. ‘‘With good preparation, I am sure it can attract more than 10,000 participants in the near future.’’
Pisut Bunnag, general manager of Reebok Thailand, was happy to see a mixture of individuals runners, rather than representatives of specialised running clubs.
‘‘There are people from different ages and groups,’’ he said. ‘‘That means the event can attract many different groups of runners.
‘‘The importhing is that it is in the centre of the city and there are many categories to choose from.’’
Kiptanui crossed the finish line in 33min, 18sec. In the women’s event, Thailand’s Suwaree Deenak won in 44:25.
Saravut Ngamsri (38:10) and Kan Kusuwan (47:46) won the under-49-year divison in the men’s and women’s category respectively.
In the women’s 60-year category, Kanoknat Wutitumpol crossed the line in 54:08 while Soravut Pootim won the men’s event at 45:51 minutes.
